Great Egret - Ardea alba
There are 4 sub-species found in Asia, Africa, Southern Europe and the Americas. They have many regional names.
Their main food is fish, frogs etc and they either stand still or slowly stalk and stab with that long beak.
In size they are slightly smaller than a Great Blue Heron but much larger than the Snowy Egret.
They do sometimes swim to hunt fish or even hover, I have seen them and Snowy Egrets both glide low and drag their feet in the water to scare fish they can then snatch. Their long powerful wings beat at only about 2 times per second and they cruise at about 25 mph.
They either migrate medium distances or in mild winters or a good location with mild winter weather may just stay put and skip the migration. My home town is near a breeding area and I now live in a wintering zone.
