this bad girl was on my deck

the dog was going to bite it so i had to relocate it. much to painful for my year old puppy.
these female wingless wasps (velvet ant) seem to always be in a hurry,very hard to shoot

👍 What I hope to remember to try one day is to dig a conical pit in a sandy area with sides too steep for one to quickly climb out. That could buy one a bit more time to get in on it with a camera.
If you are up to it, you could try to hold one with very large forceps or needle nose pliers. Their thorax is so incredibly hard that there is no danger of it being harmed. Once held, you can try to take a picture of their very long and curved stinger. It is a terror weapon.

Yikes..!! I watched a series called, "Kings of Pain" and the Velvet Ant was one that they recorded its sting to determine the pain threshold, duration and damage. They are ever so cool yet from what I seen and heard not one that you want to get stung by.
