DFW Escalator

While waiting for a flight at DFW I saw this very steep escalator. I waited for the perfect moment when a single person might be going up or down. This was it in the time allotted.

Camera was my Nikon D800 with the Nikon 24-85 lens.

While not exactly what I expected or hoped for, maybe a woman in a bright red dress, all by herself and not in exactly the place I wanted on the escalator, this is what I have to submit. I do like the idea for next time. What do you think?

Thanks for the comment but I do not have nor want Photoshop. Nice idea though. Anything about the present picture submitted?

I like it as is. I would call it "Going Up"

Hi, Dennis,
I think your concept is good.
However (IMO) in this experiment the woman’s somewhat awkward pose distracts from the sweeping perspective that would otherwise be the uncontested feature of the image’s impact.

Best regards,
Dave

Thanks Dave. There are many things I do not like about the photo but I do love the premise, the steep long escalator and the woman by herself are good points.

Bad points are her walking away from the viewer and also her dress color as noted by Pixel Stan. He suggested red and I couldn’t agree more. Yellow might also work. You are correct about the woman’s pose. In fact just a few seconds earlier she was totally bent at the waist and had partially straightened up. Another step and she would have been gone.

I wanted to get an idea of the thought process for next time. I agree with you and Pixel Stan about your ideas. Maybe next time the right person will be coming down the escalator.

I agree. It might have helped. I have deleted my original photo from my files and will hope for better next time. Thanks for you comment.

I agree with the comments above. Awkward pose, just not too appealing. A beautiful young model in a bright color dress would have helped.

What really breaks the shot up, though, is something you can't do anything about. It's the horizontal structure running across the upper end of the photo. It just ruins the effect of something moving away from the shooter. There's just nothing you can do about it. Trying to take it out in Photoshop isn't feasible. It's too big. Not that it couldn't be done but it wouldn't be worth the effort for me. I'd look around for a better set of escalators without some structural element breaking up the lines.

I attached an image, I nabbed on the internet, that has more of the elements I'm trying to explain. There are elements that run across the image rather than with the flow of the leading lines but they are arced, not straight and they don't interfere with the steps in any way. Photo credit: christopherfowler.co.uk - definitely not mine. I have nothing that good :)

Sorry for my late answer to your excellent reply.

I completely agree with your statements. I like your photo for its architectural qualities but, and I think you will agree, it wasn't what I was looking for. As you said, I had hoped for a pretty young lady coming down the escalator wearing a red dress and all by herself. Maybe next time.

Nice shot, even without a young woman in a red dress with a perfect pose! I think the composition could have been improved if you had moved to the right when you took the photo so the middle escalator went straight up and the escalators on either side were symmetrical. But it’s a very interesting photo as is.

Thank you. I appreciate your comments. Posting the photo gave me some insight of my own and of course the insight of you and others. It did not work out as I had planned but that is how things go sometimes. I will be in other airports with other escalators and will have a number of ideas to try then.
