This is a Crane Fly that had been sitting in the same spot on our porch all day yesterday. It wouldn't move so I suspect that it was nearing the end of its time with us. As evening approached I brought it in for a focus stacking session using a blue sample paint swatch to create the background. The brownish blur is its abdomen that is out of the focus range of the depth of the stack that I staged.

Because the lens that I use is a 5X power microscope objective with an open aperture (.13 NA) the depth of field is flat so only a few micron deep slice of the subject is in focus at any time.

Thanks, Quixdraw. Mother Nature is the ultimate Sci-Fi creature creator.

Tinusbum, I surely agree. This thing looks like it is coming in for a landing for sure.

Shot one of those yesterday. It's nothing like your stack, though.

Thanks, Kpmac. I'm seeing quite a few of them now so this must be their time of year to get their business done.

The blue background suits this shot and looks very realistic.

Thanks, Brenda. I've been using a sample paint swatch that I get from the paint department at the hardware store as my backgrounds now. Mark actually made the suggestion of doing it a while back.
