No, you cannot. It could easily be Minnesota’s or North Carolina’s flag also. When I worked for a Minnesota company, we would have meetings occasionally at one of the large lakes up north, and the mosquitos were numerous and huge - they would fly right into your face. Here in N.C., we have the nasty little Asian Tiger mosquitos that make life semi unbearable outside in the summer. They’re not native to the south and weren’t here when I was growing up. As the story goes they were “imported” in the water in car tires shipped into N.C. is that true? No idea, but they are here to stay. Unfortunately, the reaction of many of my neighbors is to employ a spraying service, that along with the mosquitos, kills almost every living insect in the ecosystem and is also typically toxic to fish if you have a Koi pond nearby. Our bat population (which eat mosquitos) has coincidentally vanished since my uphill neighbor started spraying.

In my area of North Carolina the mosquitos are so large they are able to breed with wild turkeys. The scary part is--they do it standing up!

Yeah, that would really help tourism. I'm sure that wasn't a serious design. It's like when a company asks the public to suggest a name for a boat or something. They always get ridiculous names. Why not just pay a design firm $100 million, and get the job done right?

"... its designer, Laurin Stennis, did not want it to be in the running."

Don't forget SC! They don't call it the "Low Country" for no reason. The water table in SC is such that it creates many swamps. Remember Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox" -- an important leader in the fight against the British in SC. I recall walking through the trails in Palmetto State Park (Charleston area) back about 30 years ago and looking down at my arm to see about a dozen large black mosquitoes attacking it. A friend I was with also was being attacked and we both agreed to exit the park quickly.

My father was stationed in the Aleutians in WWII, and I seem to recall his saying the mosquitos up there could hold their own against eagles. Or something like that.

It’s a load of crap. They have had the same flag since 1894 but now it hurt some little sissies feelings and has to be changed. I for 1 am tired of everything having to change things for the easily offended morons in this country. If your delicate sensibilities are so easily offended its your problem not the rest of the world’s.

Would you be happy if your state's flag prominently featured a "rising sun" like the Japanese Navy used during World War II - or a swastika??
