I live in the Seattle area - so I should know the answer to this - but I don't.
I have a friend who is a guitar player visiting from out of town and I want to do a portrait session (with guitar) with him.
I want to do something non-touristy (no Space Needle shots) - maybe even a little "gritty." I was thinking of old train stations, old hotels under renovation, cool alleyways, rough construction sites...... Can be indoors or outdoors.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help.

Go down to the country of Chaz or Chop. I hear it's real gritty down there.

Ah....seriously? You city is falling into disarray. Go anywhere and you will find "gritty." Maybe burned out buildings, torn down monuments, graffiti, remnants of CHOP, maybe find some cool shots of drug use on the street, I am sure you can find something.

Try the Seattle Underground tour. There are a lot of funky scenes you could do there. You even get to see some of the old Speakeasies down there.
I don’t have a link for the tour, just do a search.
PS. Ignore the trolls.

It's been a while since we've lived there, but a few opportunities come to mind:

At the locks, next to or in front of the control room building, maybe at an angle that allows views of a boat in the background or periphery.
At the locks, in the rhododendron gardens. Should be just about the right time for lots of choices.
At the locks by the fish ladder. (Can't remember what's running right now.)
I know it's touristy, but don't you have to stop at the Fremont Troll under the George Washington Bridge? That's pretty gritty. And it's not far from the locks.
How about at the fishing docks, Then eat at Chinooks. Have a Wild Mountain Blackberry Cobbler for me.
At a ferry terminal...preferably on one of the nearby islands where there are fewer people.
How about that statue at the Chinook Scenic Byway (can't remember the scale).
I remember a lot of locations down around Elbe and Eatonville, but with the railroad closed, some of those may not be available any longer.
Is the tall wood railroad trestle still there east of I-405? Is there a way to park and get it in the background?

These are just some top-of-mind locations. The Snoqualmie railroad museum is also pretty gritty.

I like the Railroad Museum idea. I've shot at the locks before. I'm guessing the control room may be off limits.
Yes - the Troll is on the list.

Since we moved away, there's a new railroad museum in Issaquah. I've only seen photographs. But it may be too new and shiny. I think it is an "up close and personal" museum, though.

I believe the Beatles stayed at the Edgewater. Considering your friend is a guitar player, maybe you can make some sort of connection there, assuming its still there.

Spent most of my life in Seattle. Have a look around Pioneer Square. It's been updated like many other cities having an "old town" part of the city, but there is still lots to see there and close by. An easy walk from Pioneer Square is 1st Avenue which used to be known as "Skid Road". Also "Chinatown", the Seahawks Stadium, old train station on Jackson St. and the Underground Tour (don't miss this tour") is an easy walk. Also consider taking the city transit bus from downtown to the other end of Madison Street to Madison Park. This bus labeled Madison used to be caught at 3rd and Union. This street ends at Lake Washington where the ferry to Kirkland used to cross Lake Washington to Kirkland until the late 1940's. Enjoy.

Fisherman's Terminal as Mr. Page suggested above (he called them the "fishing docks"). These shots will give you some idea what to expect. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-650039-1.html

Walk around Bell St, Pike Place away from the market, Pioneer Sq, moPop, areas around Green Lake. Be careful! Still dangerous in some areas.
