Welcome aboard. We have a separate posting group for astronomy photography, lots of people with experience using the latest software and hardware to get better shots. And you should go to www.darksitefinder.com to look at maps for skylight pollution. You can go to some 'pockets' of darker sky to the north, or much darker skies in AL, west of Montgomery. Look at maps of this site. Look for astronomy groups in your new state and where they have meetings or group viewing sites. You'll probably need some "light pollution blocking" narrow band filters, etc.

And, Yes, you are a Yankee in AL. Your accent and maybe even clothing will give you away. But, up in north AL where you are, there have been many, many people coming to jobs in high tech and defense for decades now. Times are changing and you will probably see fewer 'stars and bars' flags, etc. now than even a decade ago. - Been rockhounding in Opelika before. But that was more than a decade ago. Look for some other rocket club members who might have permission to use AL/TN launch sites including at night.

Happy to share tips. We vacationed last Sept. in the Mobile Bay/Gulf Coast/Pensacola area and enjoyed a bit of bird watching and butterflys/dragonflys. Just be aware, when it gets "HOT" in AL, it's really hot. A reported 90 or higher will feel like +10 to +15 degrees more uncomfortable.

You might want to look at federal severe weather maps for the paths of tornados over the last decade. Might help you choose a home location or dig a 'storm cellar' if you don't have a basement to escape to.
