Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn’t find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn’t there, so he looked in his briefcase but couldn’t find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn’t find it.
The conductor said, “Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I’m sure you bought a ticket. Don’t worry about it.”
Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.
The conductor rushed back and said, “Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don’t worry, I know who you are. No problem. You don’t need a ticket. I’m sure you bought one.”
Einstein looked at him and said, “Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don’t know is where I’m going.”

This is a true life story in my life as well.

I had recently joined a new firm in Omaha, Neb, and was on my first trip for the firm. In my previous employment, all travel details were taken care of by staff, all I had to do wa pick up tickets, etc, and be on my way. This firm was not as well organized, especially when it came to travel. Details were pretty much up to the traveler. I headed to the airport, arrived in St Louis, my destination, went to the rental car counter, picked up p/w for my car, and headed to the garage. I opened the door, sat down, and it suddenly hit me. I didn't have a clue of what hotel I was booked. By this time, the office was closed, and I never felt so alone in my life. I called a couple of contemporaries in the office, asked what hotel we generally visited when in St Louis. They gave me a couple names, and a few more phone calls, I located my reserved hotel. Lessoned learned. When you don't have someone to do it for you, you havetodo it "yo sef!"

When I traveled for business and they made the arrangements, they also gave me a sheet of paper containing an itinerary telling me where to be when.

It and my ticket were the two things I checked before I left home - and every few minutes afterwards.
I kept it in a different pocket from the ticket - and watched for strangers who might have been pick-pockets.

Heck, I find myself daily in rooms in the house wondering, “ Why am I here?”

Seems to happen more often as the years go by...

At least I close my pants fly. Most of the time. I do like the new gas fill caps that close themselves. Maybe someone will invent a fly that does it.

I was fortunate that my wife did my travel arrangements and frequently came with me if it was a new destination.

Years ago, the NYT magazine did an article about the subset of business travelers who traveled constantly, describing them as « glazed nomads,» who changed location and time zones so frequently that they became untethered from normal existence. The article was accompanied by a picture of a manikin in an airline seat, staring blankly. Unfortunately, I was in that situation at the time, so the article hit home. I definitely needed my itinerary to tell me where I was going!

One time, a colleague and I traveled to Spain for a conference. After landing, we went to a currency exchange for some cash. When he got to head of the line, forgetting what country he was in, he just asked for $100 worth of « your stuff. » It could have been me as well.

My wife often accompanied me as well. She visited places not otherwise in our personal travels map.
