You might want to consider the Sony A68. Some of it's features are mfa which doesn't usually come at this price point, focus near far range limit ( Think shooting baseball through a fence, you can set near focus limit so the camera ignores the fence ), eye detect af, live view evf, 79 point pdaf, and last but not least, the ability to use Minolta af lenses. The 50mm f1.7 is under $50. The 70-210 f4.0 can be had in good condition for under $100. This is good bang for buck in my opinion.

A friend's daughter has asked me for a recommendation for replacing her 12-year-old Canon Rebel xs, so I'm turning to my favorite resource for things photographic: UHH members.

She takes lots of pictures of her kids, and her price range is $600-$700. She's open to other brands as well as to Canon. Of course, if she stays with Canon, she probably could use her current 18-55 mm lens on the new camera and spend some of her budget on one of their 55-250mm lenses to gain more zoom range.

Any suggestions/recommendations you folks have would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be that it's time to go mirrorless. If not M43 then Sony would be worth looking at - or Fuji. Might be difficult to stay budget-wise with Fuji

In the price range you have, take a look at the Pentax K70. You can get the bundle with the 18-50mm lens (better than typical kit lenses). It has consistently excellent ratings, contains features found only on higher-end cameras. For the money, you get a lot more than the low-end Canon or Nikon models.

Might consider the Olympus OMD, E-M10,III. It's been available with a kit lens for that price range. Small and easy to carry around.

I can safely say in this day and age, its NOT the equiptment but the person taking the shot.
I see no reason to change brands and lose all the lens that she has. Selling them for pennies on dollar

I would say she needs to be pushed a bit in the pro direction. I used myself the canon rebel 300d for over 8 years. I upgraded to Nikon 810 and now I’m upgrading my knowledge.....😉

If it’s just snapshots of kids then a high quality smartphone would be a good choice.

Buying a camera is like buying a car....Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge....Canon, Nikon, Sony....Go to a Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart......pick them up, handle them ask questions, go home watch stuff about the cameras online...YouTube, etc...check pricing

The 77D was recently discontinued but some dealers still have them in stock. B&H still has them combined with the latest 18-135 lens for 799. This is a GREAT deal. The lens would be a big upgrade over the old 18-55 as well.

Again, thanks to all of you for the ideas. Even if you aren't among those to whom I sent an individual response, please know that all of your contributions were much appreciated.

But that wasn’t her question, whether she should get a new camera or upgrade to a new one. She wants a new camera to replace the old one and just wants recommendations regarding a new camera, not a recommendation to keep what she has. Kind of like the rest of us when we want a new camera.

I knew that. I figured I'd be the only one just trying to act as her conscience and provide logical advise. I said the same thing I would have told her if she were a good friend of mine. Just buying something new for new's sake is a waste of your hard earned money.

I'm wondering you got the information that 77d was discounted? over last weeks spoke to multiple canon reps and they said its not. Came out in 2017 so too early to stop it. The shortage might be supply chain issues due to covid. They just released the t8i
so its possible its discounted by why would canon deny that.. I was at B&H twice in last few weeks and they had a shortage of some tripods due to supply chain issues. 77D was made in Japan but some parts might be made in China.
please post the source of the discontinued info. I saw some web sites say that and some said out of stock. Canon denys it is
