The chance of using your Nikon glass on a Sony with an adapter being faster to focus doesn’t seem likely. As for shutter speed, you D500 and D850 can both shoot at 1/8000 of a second. Do you really need faster?

I think the OP meant “Frame Rate”.

I have a lot of Nikon gear, so am pretty deeply "invested" in that brand. None of the three bodies I have (D5/850/500) are mirrorless and I have been thinking about adding a mirrorless body to the arsenal to get faster shutter speed and AF esp for BIF and wildlife action as well as for better video capabilities. I have heard a lot about the wonders of Sony and other mirrorless bodies and lenses - however, going outside the Nikon range would mean interoperability problems. What would you wise people advise?
a) stick with Nikon?
b) if yes, which one?
c) if not, what would you recommend and how would compatibility / interoperability be solved?
d) should I just shut up and stick with DSLR's ?!!

You already have the best equipment (D5 and D500) for BIF and wildlife action in the Nikon world. The Z6 camera has better video capabilities but lesser capability in sports and wildlife than the equipment you already owned. For landscape, portrait and general photography, Z7 is barely better than D850 in terms of AF precision and capability due to focus peaking, zooming view, etc.
What you gain in mirror less is (1) size and weight, (2) see your final image before taking the shot via EVF (WYSIWYG) since what you see reflects all your camera settings, (3) no mirror slap to worry, (4) IBIS (sensor based image stabilization and (5) virtually no more or much less AF tuning in DSLR.

I hope this short summary will help you.

I have a Nikon D300, D810 and purchased a Z6. I also have a Sony Mirrorless A6500. I totally recommend getting the Nikon Z6 with the F-mount adapter. I do have 2 Z lenses, the 24-70 and the 14-24. I ordered the Z mount 24-200 and it is being shipped.

I would leverage your current lenses. I have a 70-200 F4 Fresnel, the 300m F4 Fresnel. They work great with the Z6. Stay with Nikon and you will be as happy as me!

I do like the Sony, but I don't have much glass, just the 18-105 e-mount. Good stuff though, but I'd leverage your Nikon lenses and get the Z6.

I live in India, so that's not going to work. Why are you selling it?

I live in India too. I have (1) Nikon 810 along with several professional lenses ( 2) Olympus OMD EM1 MarkII along with almost all the lenses (3) Nikon Z7 + 24-70/4, 35/1.8, 50/1.8 & 85/1.8 (4) Recently i bought Sony A9M2 and 55/1.8 ( Zeiss ) & Sony 85/1.8.

I am not a professional, but, only an enthusiast. Wish to get rid of my Nikon 810 with lenses & Olympus OMD EM1 Mark II along with lenses.

I have Nikon gear. I own the Nikon D800, D500 and the Z7 (let go of the D7000 and my first Nikon the D200). I have not found the Z7 useful for animals in motion, but perhaps I still need to experiment more with it. I rely on the D500 and a Nikon 200-500 or a Nikon 500 PF lens for animal shots and use the Z7 for objects, nature, etc., but not motion shots. I love the resultant nature, object images taken with the Z7. I hear a lot of good things about the Sony cameras for birds in flight and based on the images I've seen from friends the cameras do a great job for wildlife shooting.

There is only you and your camera. Will you let the mirror be the weakest link in the chain?

I have several Canon bodies and a dozen or so lens. Why would I switch to Nikon or Sony unless all of a sudden they became 2 or 3 times as good as Canon. In your case, imho, stick with Nikon, Sony ain't all that wonderful. Or maybe you're a millionaire. And if so, why are you hanging around here asking dumb questions? Just go spend some money! Harry

The first next-step for all photographers contemplating a move to mirrorless is to sell all their DX / EF-S equipment. If they've already made this action, the next next-step is to sell all their DSLR-style lenses where there is already a superior Z / RF / E-mount lens. The final-step is to sell-off all the DSLR bodies. Don't let a mirror stop you from being the photographer you could become.

Which DSLR gets the most use, and why?

The Z7 is more like the D850 while the Z6 is more like the D500.

No, Z6 is FF and D500 is DX. Z6 would be like D750, I have both, they have a few similarities.

The Nikon Z6 is supposed to be better for video than the Z7.

Yup. Having a D750 I see my anticipated Z6 primarily as a D750 with IBIS and a better viewfinder. Silent shutter, smaller size and all that is welcome, but IBIS plus full time live view is the essential package.

This is going to be an interesting discussion. I am like the OP, with tons of Nikon glass, and I suspect many others are in the same boat. I would lean towards staying with Nikon, but not decided yet on the body. Waiting is also an option.

I'm a "me too". I've used the Sony (A6500) and it was a bit confusing after Nikon as the menus are a lot different. I sold it, and ended up buying a Z6, with the 24/70 kit lens, and the FTZ adapter which lets me use my Nikon gear. My Nikon was a D500, so it is the DX format, and my lenses therefore are "crop factor," but when I need a telephoto there's no problem. The Z6 is a fantastic camera and if you're considering the change, and want to be able to use your older Nikon (F mount) lenses, with the converter, there's no issue. Buy the Nikon.

...dude, the Z6 is full frame and is not a good comparison to the D500. I have both, and the one that's most always with me is the Z6, I *really* like it.

I know that the Z6 is “FF” - but is still more like the D500 than like the D850, both in sharpness and in high ISO performance.

You can't compare a 24mp FF camera against a 46mp FF camera, you could compare the Z6 against the D610, D5 or D750, but not the D850 not even the D810.
