When I was in college ages ago I once grew Physarum polycephalum (spelling?) for some biochemical experiment. Also looking at the "mass" under a microscope there is no real separation of cells, just a glob of cytoplasm with many nuclei. When it sporulates and forms fuiting bodies then it would show typical fungi cellular structure. Though I never got to look at that up close.
