This is a weevil that I found on a wildflower blossom on yesterday's walkabout along the river in the thick weeded fields. I brought it home to be a preserved specimen and I staged it for a focus stacking session. Although they are considered to be a pest, I find them to be quite interesting and uniquely different in their own way.
Nice! It looks like an interesting one, with enlarged jaws. It is from one of the families with antennae that are not elbowed, so that would narrow down the ID.

Thanks, Mark. I don't come across them that often for I suspect that they are very good at hiding when they burrow deep into the wildflower blossoms.

It did, indeed narrow it down, but not much.
It broke weevils into two groups.
One smaller, not much.
Obscure weevils with geniculate antenna and obscure weevils with straight antenna.
The keys weigh about five or more pounds.
A large and difficult family.

Often before you see them, they become aware of you, pull in their legs, and drop to the ground.
A common insect defense mechanism/ strategy.

Thanks, Napabob. It's not often that I find something new like this weevil.
