Doing the Twist...
...Like We Did Last Summer
The same Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) I followed in the two "Angel" posts.
He chased the school of minnows along the shallows making several strikes and got some, missed others.
Then the school reversed and shoot around and between his legs back the other way.
He had just missed a strike and is twisting so fast water drops are still coming off his beak.
In less than a second between one step and the next he was reversed and chasing the minnows but they turned and went into deeper water at which point the egret turned the pursuit run into a take off run and circled the pond again looking for more.
They often "herd" minnows using their feet. I have seen them fly low trailing their feet in the water to startle minnows into jumping so they can snatch them out of the air.
Excellent quality pic. Noticing wildlife behavior is what leads to great shots.

Thank you. The Journal of Wildlife Photography is having a "bird" photo contest now until Sep 15, members/subscribers can post one a day but must have scientific name and a feature or behavior note. Prize is a RRS tripod and Wimberly Gimbal head.
