... The 3 Musketeers bar was originally split into three pieces with three different flavors: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. When the other flavors became harder to come by during World War II, Mars decided to go all chocolate.

Why?
That is what Wikipedia says.
Today it differs very little from several similar bars made by the same company.

I remember that. Vanilla was my favorite and strawberry was my least favorite. Wouldn't you know that my least favorite would be the remaining flavor.

Sorry:

The 3 Musketeers candy bar was invented in 1932 in the United States by M&M/MARS. It was the third candy bar produced by the company. It was originally packaged as three, individual mini bars of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry nougat; hence the name, 3 Musketeers. ... The 3 Musketeers became a single candy bar with a creamy chocolate nougat, which was the most popular flavor, when World War II made its way to the forefront and money became tight. Strawberry and vanilla had to take a backseat, since the U.S. government ordered rationing of all sugars in spring 1942. It was too expensive to produce all three flavors.

Cool. Now I know why it was called "Three Musketeers".
I never saw the three individual bars.
Neat history. Never thought to look it up.

Thanks.

Remember the "original" Three Musketeers bar as a kid in the early '50s. I remember the tv ad for the candy bar saying that the bar could be shared with two others by dividing the three parts. I remember those bars as being all vanilla nougat inside.

While I'm reminiscing, I'd like to point out that those '50s Three Musketeers bars were almost twice the size of today's single bar. The same can be said for my other favorite, the Mounds bar. Today's Mounds are just about half those original ones. Three Musketeers was 5 cents; Mounds 10 cents.

And, I know, others will say that everything is more expensive today, while getting less for the money.

(and a nickle)

To cover cost increases,
almost all manufactures reduce the size and keep the price;
Then later they increase the price;
Then later they reduce the size;
Then the price...

A pound of coffee is now either 12 or 14 ounces, along with most canned goods.......
Screws up recipes as canned stuff USED to be 16 ounces.

There is almost an inch of head space in the Club Crackers box now, ½" on the side;
but the box is the same size.....
Saltines now have the holes in the crackers so large that jelly goes through them.
Lorna Doone cookies are now almost bite-size.

I agree with your input and examples. I've been cussing out things like facial tissue size, BandAid quality, etc. for years.
Curiosity item: at the local Stop & Ship supermarket which includes a Dunkin' Donuts stand, the store shelf Dunkin' Donuts "pound bag" is 13 oz. for around $7-8, while the DD stand has a rack where you can buy DD coffee in 16 oz. bags for $5.99! Go figure.
