Grasshopper

This is a grasshopper that was cooperative enough to pose for me while walking about with camera in hand as it sat of some of last seasons dried plant. I suspect that he would rather eat the fresh greens although it may have chosen to be there as a part of its camouflage from predators.

Yep...it's time to reload the chigger and tick bites. It's quite boring sitting around with no itches to scratch.

Big 10-4..! I always carry my empty pill bottles with me for I never know what I may find (I keep some by the door too). I have a wonderful little light weight rake that I take with me and I can use it as a pole to help support the camera and to help an old man get back up from his knees sometimes.

Check carefully for ticks. Tuck your socks in your pants. Chiggers are the worst, but for me they seem to be a late summer thing.
Nice katydid!

Mark, I'm just starting to get relief from the chiggers from my previous outing and you are ever so right that they are the WORST. The welt on my butt from the Lone Star Tick has gone down now. All my fault of course I knew better. I use 'Repel' which is 98% DEET that works well for me.

It is believed that God created all life on earth...except for the chiggers which are the spawn of the Devil for they serve no purpose other than to torture mankind.

Just an FYI: There are two major divisions in the jumping Orthoptera - Caelifera (generally grasshoppers) and Ensifera (generally katydids and crickets). Your spec is a female katydid, probably a Conocephalus (or meadow 'grasshopper' - are you confused by the common names yet? Better, a meadow katydid!). Key characters, long antennae and long ovipositor, in this case, sword-like, and short wings (it's an adult). Nice find, they are usually very quick to disappear.

Glad you are again out in the field Gary and shooting living creatures. Tuck everything in.

Great shot. I haven't seen any photos of a large, brightly colored 'hopper we had in southern Florida, the Lubber. Where did they go?

Thanks for the info. The more that I come to know about things shows me the more about things that I don't know.

Ooooo, I just looked them up and they are real colorful beauties. I have yet to find any with the vivid colors so they may not be native to our area however they are pretty for a grasshopper.
