Will an iPad work for my needs?

I will be moving across the country next month, and my desktop computer ( iMac) will most likely be in storage for 2-3 months.
I was thinking about getting either a MacBook pro or a iPad pro to be able to down load and edit photos in LR and PS during that time. I shoot with a Canon 5DM4 and 7DM2, so I will need to be able to download both CF and SD cards. In the past, I thought iPads could not process CF card, but don’t know if that is true with the 2020 models.
Does anyone have experience with using iPad for CF cards in LR and PS? or should I just get a laptop..My concern is that once I am settled, I don’t think i need both a laptop and desk top, and I love my desk top. I thought an iPad might desirable, but not sure it will suite my needs for photography.. Would love input from those who have used iPads with CF cards

You can easily download to an iPad with a card reader made for iPad. You can also do it via the WiFi app, but it only downloads small jpeg versions. The card reader downloads full raw files. There are several tablet based processing apps, but, in my opinion, the best is Lightroom. An iPad is a great complement to your desk top and a lot cheaper than the MacBook Pro. Make sure you buy the one with lots of memory. I have the IPad Air third generation.

I use my IPad Pro for simple edits when quickly altering a photo to send via the Internet. I love my Mac Book pro for photography editing. Get the MacBook and a cheaper $300 iPad if needed for reading etc.

Get the laptop. Check Other World Computing, macsales.com they are having a sale now.

CarlosU above has some really good information.

Get lot's of RAM 32GB if possible and Hard Drive space, minimum 512MB.

Good luck.

The iPad Pro has a USB-C connection so you could connect a card reader directly to the iPad or connect your camera.

If the primary reason for getting either device is your photography then the MacBook is the better choice.

If you want the iPad for all that an iPad can do different than a computer then you can develop a workflow using the iPad. Brian Matiash and Nicole S Young (among others) have You Tube presentations on traveling with an iPad.

I guess the actual question is "will the iPad pro read RAW files off a CF and SD card, and then be able to open in the LR and PS app"...I would just want to be able to do quick edits while traveling. I can down load onto my desk top once we are settled, and do organizing and editing then, even if it's 3 months later...

Yes and Yes

iPad LR can upload the files to the cloud and later when you have access to your desktop machine you can download them. Any edits you made are transferred as well. Whether or not you turn sync on would depend on how much Adobe Creative Cloud storage you have.

I have both and an unused Old HP desk top. I use the MacBook Pro for all my editing and for traveling. Couldn’t be happier! I use the iPad for surfing, UHH, reading, etc.

Get the latest iPad Pro 2020 12.9”. With the Retina display you will be astonished at the clarity of your photos. Add an Apple Pencil and you will find that editing in Lr and PS Is very precise. The USB C is much less of a pain than the other connectors. I have hooked up a 4Tb drive just for the hell of it but it is an indication of its versatility. Then there are approximately 2 million apps to use for a multitude of tasks. Every day I am astonished with what I can accomplish. Be a leader not a follower.
