Recently I packed up some of my infrequently used lenses and sent them off to KEH and MPB for quotes. KEH was the better of the two so off they went.

I have been lusting after the Sony 135 1.8 and GAS got the best of me. It arrived today. Too early to give an opinion since I have only taken a few photos. Here is a sample at 1.8 close up.

I have Nikon equipment, but Nikon makes the 135mm D lens which is an older design lens, however it is a great portrait lens and I like the 135mm.

Yes but what I like about the Nikon one it has an adjustment where you can change the DOF while maintaining the aperture. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/camera-lenses/af-dc-nikkor-135mm-f%252f2d.html It is the dial at the front that let's you set the DOF.

It doesn't change the DOF, it defocuses areas of the image. Sort of like some of the new phone cameras.

The structure is the same it allows you to narrow the DOF by narrowing behind and in front of the focus point. It has the same effect of changing the DOF.

I was being too technical. Of course you are correct.

It was designed for film...are you using it on a digital Nikon?

Yes it works on all my DSLR's but not on the Z6.

If you understand DOF and its relationship to F-stops. you can do this with any lens. I teach my students how to adjust DOF with F-stops and how to "lie" to the camera by moving the focus point fore and aft to put the DOF where you want it to make the foreground or background in or out of focus or all in focus. Focus peaking helps visually see this. Us old timers pretty much know by memory our lenses and how to place DOF.

This lens does this without all the processing.

Today, in my humble opinion, it is very difficult to find a bad lens. To begin with the technologies available in the manufacturing of lenses are available to all lens makers. Only when it comes to tolerances we can see the differences in price and quality.
The image of the flower is a nice one and I wonder why you decided to go wide open if I see no selective focus here. Looks to me a small aperture would have been much better for this image but that is me.

I wasn't trying to get the best possible image I wanted to show the detail at f1.8. Perhaps my intentions were not clear. I will be using this as my low light bird lens although not exclusively.

While I agree that today's lenses are much better than those of the past there are a few exceptional lenses which are equally hard to find because of all hype which most people accept at face value.

There is a difference between an Otis and a Sigma even if most people will never appreciate it.
