Need sound advise. I am 73 years old 5'3" and 130 lbs woman. I have been back packing my camera equipment around the world, until lately of course. There are occasions where I would find it getting a bit difficult to carry 20+ pounds of equipment around all day. I have a Nikon D750 and a number of lenses, the heaviest is my Tamron 70-200. I want to hear all the pros and cons of the Leica Q2. It is quite a leap, financially, but it sounds like a less exhausting way to maximize my love of photography and travel. I know there're occasion where my Nikon will be the way to go, but will I enjoy the ease and comfort of a high end point and shoot.

For my travels and to lighten my Nikon load, I went with the M43 Panasonic Lumix G9 and love it!! The systems offers great glass to choose from and the images right out of the camera are sharp. My wife like might new camera system so much, I get her the same setup...

My travel lenses are all light weight. All Nikon. 24-85mm f3.5-5.6; 70-200 f 4; 300 mm f4 p; and a Nikon prime, either 50mm or 35mm.

Lighter weight, maybe Nikon mirrorless,

I am very close , I need to see if my local camera shop has one to handle, if not I may just rent one for a week from Borrow Lenses. I love the challenge of a new learning curve. Thanks Prof. What do you teach?

Stay safe

As a Photography instructor I see and handle many cameras. In the last year I had the pleasure of handling the Leica C-Lux. It might have been one of the other models. It was very easy to handle. It’s controls were intuitive and very little confusion as compared to some cameras. I think the Leica would not require anymore of a learning curve than a new “Mr Coffee” maker.

I'm sorry that I don't have any experience with the Leica Q2. I do have an affection for the Leica brand as my last film camera was a Leica and I loved it.

Moving on I have a perspective that drives me. I am a 73 year old male who shot with Nikon dslr for years. The equipment started getting heavy on different trips--specially on mountain paths and boats so I decided to go with something lighter. (I would also mention that the weight limits on small planes was also a consideration.) I decided to go mirrorless but like many of my decisions things went amok. I wound up changing from a crop sensor Nikon to a full frame mirrorless Sony with Sony lenses. I haven't helped that much with weight but the real advantage is that the change gave me a new perspective on photography and I believe my pictures are better. At least it injected a new energy into my photography.

So my perspective is that you can teach and old dog new tricks and it's really fun to learn a whole new approach to your pictures. I think you have a lot of good reasons to switch to the Leica Q2 or some other similar Leica that will give you what you want. I wish you great shooting and like you, I'm dying to be able to travel again when we can. Happy travels and shooting...

But then quixdraw wouldn't be a real man.

here is another rental shop. At $79 for 7 days, some people spend more than that on coffee for 7 days. I have used this company several times. They are good people.

As a frame of reference, I just packed my Olympus OMD EM1MII, three lenses covering from 9-300 mm (18-600 mm ff equivalent) plus 2 filters, Canon 500D diopter and various cleaning supplies into a large Lowpro shoulder bag. Including the bag the kit comes in at 6.25 pounds. If I was willing to be limited to 300 mm ff equivalent I would use a smaller lighter bag and come in well under 5 pounds.

Really??? Moronic statement. I think in the future you should stay silent and be thought of as a fool rather than open your mouth and confirm the fact.

Oh, I agree with Thomas 100%. I bought a Sony a couple of years ago. Had an incredibly exasperating experience trying to learn their archaic menu system. I missed so many shots because I could not locate a particular function in their diverse menu library that I needed at the precise moment of image capture. It was not a "pleasant ordeal" for me either. So after 2 months, I sold it and stayed with Nikon. It's the Nikon brand I learned in the 1970's and into the digital age with their menu layout. Nikon's menus make a lot more sense, so at age 72, I will never switch to another camera brand.

Unless you have been tested for the virus, you could be an asymptomatic carrier with the likelihood that you can infect anyone you come into close contact with, unless you are a hermit. Being a free citizen does not give you the right to cause illness or death to others.
This is not fake news or media BS. It is the science and is well documented by apolitical health care workers and epidemiologists.

I could not disagree more tomcat. My wife and I were 72 when we switched from Canon to Olympus. Yes, there is a learning curve. We spent about an hour a day at home for two weeks simply playing with the camera to learn its menu and other tools. There is nothing better than photography for seniors, it requires thought and learning and physical activity. The Olympus does so much that the menu system is considered one of the most complex yet we learned enough to use the cameras very well and find the unusual or infrequently used modes that are built in. Never stop learning and NEVER say I am too old to learn.

scubadoc, save your energy, some people will not listen even when shown proof or logic. Personally, we do not go out without our masks. In South Carolina you cannot enter a grocery store or pharmacy without a mask.

I admire your zest for all things in this life Ms. Techie.
I'm a newbie here and can't come up with any advice, but I love your retort of " Don't let the number fool you".
Wise words. Thank you & good luck looking for your quest for "weight loss"!

Be well.

I love my G9 with 100-400 for birding. If I could afford a Leica I would would go for it. My shooting friend uses the Sony RX10IV Bridge camera with a range of 24-600mm. It is an excellent camera. I have rented it when I made a trip to Mammoth and printed some large prints. We just canceled our New Mexico trip..
Thank you for your service.

As a Teacher, I agree. Don't be a dinosaur. Dinosaurs did't learn so they became extinct. Nurses are always learning just to keep up with what's new. You won't have any problem with any system you chose. Most cameras have many functions and modes to be able to customize the camera to your shooting needs. Sony has been touted as being the worst menu , but not really. Sony Cameras can be customized to an extreme personal choice and then recalled at the push of a single button. Other camera manufactures have a large number of models that do specific things rather than a few models that are fully customizable. Like anything else. It is a matter of looking at the owners manual or the web site. I would be careful in your choice. I dearly love Olympus, but they were just sold to a big conglomerate. It could be that Olympus was just given the Dinosaur status.

My post was not a huge expenditure of energy, and if others read it besides whom I was responding to, and if it may save a life or two, then it was energy well spent. In Maryland, it is a state law that masks be worn when entering any establishment. In my experience, I haven't seen anyone flout the law, even those who consider themselves right wing. Our governor is a Republican in a blue state.
