I’ve been scanning this website every time I receive an email and have found it entertaining and in many cases informative.

I have never posted a comment but I will now regarding Abe’s…

I research everything heavily before I buy from anyone online. I am a systems analyst, programmer and software engineer for nearly 5 decades so I am pretty detail oriented.

I bought several Canon lenses L series from Abe’s. I requested on the phone when I placed my order that I get the US warranty. It cost a little more, but it included hood, endcap, lens case and lens cover.

All accessories including the lens case that comes with some L series lenses were authentic Canon gear.

Even with the additional cost of the US warranty, I still saved hundreds of dollars.

The equipment arrived next day and as requested. I double checked the serial numbers with Canon and they are legitimate and are covered under the Canon US warranty.

They can be repaired at any Canon authorized repair center so I definitely wouldn’t purchase their in-house warranty.

Yes, they are bait and switch experts which is annoying, predatory and unethical in my opinion.

If you don’t know what to ask for you will likely get screwed.

But if you hook up with a sales person and get their name and extension number and place your order through them always specifying you want the US warranty, you will get exactly what Canon ships with all their lenses in the same retail packaging.

They also offer military discounts.

In case you’re wondering, I have no connection with Abe’s other than being a customer. My wife and I own a web development company since 1994. We take our own photographs and we have about 30K in Canon equipment.

Saving hundreds of dollars, especially in this market with the world upside down, is most satisfying.

Good luck!

Warm Regards,

Well, isn't it so wonderful you have to 'fight' with Abe's to not get screwed! When you buy from B&H, you can easily order on the phone or online, get your product shipped and delivered quickly and not have to fight to get what comes in the box! What a concept. I do not work for B&H, but I am a longtime customer and I do appreciate their fine service. Best of luck.

Well said sir...

I am from Chicago and worked for Citicorp out of 399 Park Avenue for many years

I bought my first SLR, a Nikon F3 and assorted lens, at a Times Square camera store in 1981. It’s an experience I will never forget.

NYC camera stores are sharks. I was there negotiating for 3 1/2 hours but I finally got a good price but I’m not sure it was worth the 3 1/2 hours of my time…

(-;

I fully understand how unnerving it can be dealing with ‘sharks’ and I also understand that sometimes you just would rather pay the premium of dealing with honest folks.

I’ve done both, and what drives which way I go at any given time when I have to make purchases is what my cash flow looks like...

Sometimes I need, or want, something but cash is tight so I jump into the frying pan and hope I don’t get burned!

But as Kenny Rogers sings...

“You gotta know when to hold them, when to fold them and when to walk away”

Stick with the reputable companies (B&H, Adorama, KEH for used but reliable equipment). Abes's from Maine is a grey market, bait and switch shop. They thrive on olks looking for a a cheap deal but who are not too knowledgeable about products.

There are several legit camera stores out there....B&H(NYC), Roberts(Indianapolis), to name a couple.

Perhaps you have heard of honest Abe? That was someone else--not the Abe at Abe's of Maine.

Thank you. Very gratifying.

More accurately, SOME NYC camera stores are sharks.

I followed this link and read a few pages of reviews, all uniformly negative. I noticed that somehow Abe's of Maine has a 4+ star rating. I sorted by top reviews and the best had 1 star. Am I missing something?

Abe's of Maine had anF BBB rating when they went out of business n 2007 but re-opened as WestPark Electronics dba Abe's of Maine in Linden NJ. ( https://www.bbb.org/us/nj/linden/profile/electronic-equipment-dealers/westpark-electronics-llc-0221-27002918 ) They are still F rated by the BBB.
Anyone who knows anything about cameras and/or electronics reatial will tell you to STAY AWAY!
