I am new to editing Raw photos. I shoot mainly Wildlife, but have just bought a Nikon D850 to shoot more landscapes(by the way I’m finding it even better for wildlife than my D500). I have been playing around with some of the free software(Capture NX-D), but have found it limited for my use. I have got a copy of Affinity(an impulse buy as it was half price),but have not really got to grips with it yet. Recently, I have downloaded a trial of Capture One Pro 20 and with a bit of reading up and a few on-line tutorials I’m finding it really easy to use and am very impressed by its sharpening and noise reduction capabilities. My question is, if I go down the Capture One route am I missing out on anything extra that Lightroom or Photoshop have to offer.

I also purchased Affinity Photo at 50% discount and haven't looked back. There are so many free tutorials on line and within the Affinity program itself. The Affinity book suggested is suppose to be wonderful, but I find I am a visual learner and have gone forward at lightening speed. You will love the work you can do, give it a try you've have already made the investment.

I've used Ps since 2004. As such, and with the programming I've written or modified, I'm pretty much cemented to it.

Luminar4 has layers as does almost any other software I've tested except the ultra simple ones.

Check out DXO photolab3 and the NIK collection 3 plugins for PL and other software. Download a trial. Check out the videos first if you are so inclined. I am using this for raw files from my d850 and D500.

Nikon capture NXD is not a bad program and has control points in it. DxO now owns the control point technology. I love control points for making local and global adjustments.

I found Luminar easiest to learn after trying about 10 editors. It's also a fairly cheap one time purchase. Whatever you decide, try a two week to one month free trial of the software first. Most including Luminar have plenty of online documentation and Youtube videos to help you get started.

Thank you all for the responses. Plenty of food for thought. Is there anyone who Has extensive experience in Raw editing who is using Capture One Pro 20. If so I would be interested to hear what they think of it.

I have used C1 Pro for Sony for several years and love it. I started with the free Express version, then upgraded to the Pro version. Some C1 users also use PhotoShop for finishing touches, but I've never needed anything but C1 for my Sony (I use free PhotoScape X for my Olympus TG-5).

There are lots of tutorials and frequent webinars, but I think you'll find C1 pretty intuitive once you get used to the interface (the same is true for any other complete raw converters). I suggest watching some of these (https://learn.captureone.com), then trying either the free Express or the 30-day free trial of the Pro version for your camera brand (the brand-specific versions are less expensive than the all-inclusive Pro version). Good luck!

Personally, I don't think you can do better than Lightroom for $ 10 per month! YMMV. Best of luck.

The only one with layers? You must be joking. I use layers all the time in capture one.

Why is everyone hung up on proprietary software that costs $. Look into Darktable which is FREE, Opensource, and can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. There are a number of excellent videos on using it, I recommend Bruce Williams on YouTube for a start. Darktable is excellent software and have observed on some videos that it is better than Lightroom. The one downside is the manual, which is over 250 pages long, is written by those that match my modified cliche, 'Intuitively obvious to the most casual observer, when you are intimately familiar with the product'. Actually the commercial software falls into that category too, just that there are many authors that like to write books and make money on the side showing you how to use the software.

Photo editing and image making sound daunting, but as you understand your editing objectives, you become much more comfortable. Affinity Photo is an exceptional editor. Get the book, as someone suggested and you will be well into image making. That would be the most propecious moment to investigate what else is there.

I know of no proprietary software that dosn't do Layers, however, a free trial will confirm.

ACDSee has several levels of software that does NOT use layers. Only their top pro version uses layers.

I have used DXO Photolab for a number of years. I especially like its noise reduction for Raw and its Viewpoint is superior than PS for correcting image geometry.
