In general, hornets are larger wasps, closely related.

WASP on a Peony bud for sure.....Hornets are larger and more aggressive when you get too close to them.

It is a paper wasp, and a handsome one at that. Not at all aggressive when out foraging away from their nest. This one looks to be getting a sugary secretion from a bud. They are also predators on insects, especially caterpillars, and so most gardeners should welcome them.

Very nice detail in DL. I think it may be a Mason's Wasp.
Thanx for sharing.

I see no reason to allow a hornet/wasp to live near my home. They can sting you multiple times. They invite all their friends to come over and annoy you. They have nasty stingers. I have tried everything. Dozens of containers of wasp/hornet killer have been ingested, yet they live. Until I just found Zevo. A rather pleasant smelling item that supposedly uses a neurotoxin, that doesn't harm humans, or pets. I've empties one can in the hole going under our shed, where the vast majority live and half of another onto the eaves on the second story of our house. They are fewer in number. I'm sure if I keep using this stuff, my lungs will die, but so will they.
