The Getty Conservation Institute spent nearly ten years restoring King Tut's tomb. Now, for the first time in 3,300 years, the outer coffin will be leaving the tomb to begin it's restoration.

I've always wondered how this is not considered grave robbing?
Not that I personally care that much.

I got to see the Tut exhibit in Los Angeles when it was at LACMA for some time. I was involved with the climate control for the exhibit. After I charted the temp and humidity for about a week, they started setting up the exhibit and I got to see as they placed everything in the building. Went off without a hitch, but to be honest I wasn't really that impressed. I guess I'm just not into the whole Kings and tomb artifact thing.

Millions of pieces of antiquity have been taken from sites all over the world. Some of that taking is done with permission of local authorities, and is put on display for the public. Other items are stolen for private collections. England and Greece are still arguing over the Elgin Marbles.

In this particular case, Getty will restore the coffin and return it to Egypt.

At least his remains were treated with respect. Early Europeans tossed some mummies into steam boilers as fuel.
