How many times has this happened in real life - with all sorts of things? 
EDIT: Somewhat related - When my wife and I were going together many years ago, Christmas was coming around, and she had just bought a new car. Being a considerate boyfriend, I bought her an ice scraper for the windshield, a note pad, pen, and other "essential" items. She married me anyway. That reminds me - when I was a kid, I once bought my mother a mop for her birthday.
