Taking what I have learned so far I reprocessed M51 and hopefully didn't over process it this time.

Another shot at M51 processing. I think this one is slightly better.

That turned out really nice.

Do you use darks and bias? It looks like you have some noise that should have been removed.

Yep I used flats, darks and bias frames. It was warm out ~75 degrees F and a standard DSLR does get a bit of noise on 6 minute exposures. Eventually I will get a cooled camera to improve the situation. For now I use what I've got.

Ah, makes sense. Great image, I have to process mine, hopefully I can come close to what you have.

I found that using the Multiscale linear transform in pixinsight can help remove a lot of the noise but cannot remove it completely. It has a lot of parameters to play with and I expect I will get better with it over time.

You are probably better to leave it, it’s only obvious when you pixel peep...I’m a peeper, I don’t think anyone else will notice.

Hi Jay
I hadn't noticed that before but if the bright cores are eyes, I can see an abstract Cheshire Cat.

Thanks. This is the best M51 I've done so far. Still need to work on some of the noise when zoomed in. The Trifid I posted on the gallery is probably better noise wise .

I think you give credence to Aperture is Everything.
Is this at 4000 mm?
So sharp and clear!

Yep both M51 and M20 where taken at 4096mm to be precise. The DSLR tends to filter out the HA in both images but what little gets through tends to be more aqua than red in color (Probably due to the bayer pattern that has 2 greens for each red and blue pixel).
