Very interesting, and I did read a few more articles. It does not sound like they are going to raise it though.

I can't help but think that that is an awful lot of steel now lying at the bottom of the ocean. Why not cut up these ships and use the steel for other purposes? After World War I all of the capital ships of the German navy were sunk. Britain sure could have used that steel in 1940.

One of the supposed causes of World War II was the decision of the US to no longer ship scrap iron/steel to Japan, who lacked domestic sources of steel, so we did collect such things, but only in smaller quantities. Sinking ships was a common way of destroying them until fairly recently.
