I don't think it works as well in B&W. It works tonally but it loses the story.

Using either Photoshop or Nik Silver Efex, you could try various filters modify the image.

Hello DWU2, the image was converted using Nik Silver Efex, it's filtering and then finished in Photoshop. The idea behind the B&W version was that I was asked about a B&W version of the green colour one. Personally I didn't think that it would work as well in B&W. I made this version to show that conversion to show B&W wasn't the best way to go with this one. It loses it's the story in B&W, which is mouldering green decay

I like it; but I think you are right. Rusty Gold loses a bit of the story when we don't really see the rust.
