Black and white is great but we are so lucky to have color now. In the 1950's when I got my first Brownie Holiday Flash camera I mostly used black and white film because it was cheaper and I didn't have much money to spend. After I joined the army and got my first 35mm camera I began shooting more color. I turned to slides and shot hundreds of them. I haven't shot black and white for many years now. Maybe I should begin experimenting with it.

I like the approach, but in this case, I think there is too much going on in the background to make this a successful b&w image. See if you can find some a more uniform background.
I like the color version better in this case, John.
Good set, John, but I lean toward the color if I had to pick.

Beautiful flower and shot John, my preference is colour.
The colour shot is good with the green / purple contrast. Unfortunatyely there is not enough tonal variation for a successful black and white. Ultimately your B/W shots should go from full black through the greys to full white without losing detail. In so many cases a great colour shot just doesn't cut it in mono.
Play around also with landscapes and if you own b&w sotware like Topaz B&W Effects 2 I would suggest trying filters readily available in the software. They change tonalities that could be to your liking. Under the filters the program lists some toning like sepia that can impart a different look to the image.
I like your conversion and I share the same enthusiasm of others in the forum.
