I grew up with a federal enlarger. Parents visited family in Michigan in 1953 and I've always thought father bought it there and shipped it home to nz. They traveled in to England and returned to nz 1955. So all the family photos were printed via the Federal and I used it when I got older. Sadly it was destroyed in a fire but I have the steel trunk it was posted home in. That's my belief, he may have bought it here in nz but there timing is correct. Just seeing it here had brought back happy memories.

Federal 311 enlarger, up to 6x6 cm negatives. It went for $69 in 1955, which would by about $660 in today's money. Amateur photo equipment was no joke in the postwar era. And this was one of the cheaper ones, the Omega line didn't start any lower than $110, equivalent to over $1,000 today.

That Federal was my very first enlarger back in 1966,...it did some amazing work which I learned by until I graduated to a mechanical operated height adjusting one,...a Bessler 23C I believe.

I too grew up with one (my father's). Still have it in storage. I think you could go up to 4x5!

That must have been a real beast! Catalog listing says the post was thirty six inches long. With no geared raising and lowering mechanism you would soon have Popeye forearms if you used it a lot. At 129.50, not an insignificant investment, either.
