Lightroom & Photoshop NEF files

I use lightroom Version 5.7, and I use Photoshop CS 6.
In the past when I purchase a new camera, I just updated camera raw.

I purchased a new Nikon D 850 last week.
My LR or PS will not open the D850 NEF raw photos.

I look for an update camera raw, I found version 9.12.1 for the D850.
But my PS states the last version that will work on it is 9.1.1 which is loaded.

As a work around I am using Adobe DNG converter.

Does anyone know how I can fix my LR & PS so they will work
with the Nikon D850 NEF raw photos.

Any help would be great

You've got the fix -- DNG converter. Adobe's answer is sign up for the new versions of LR/PS.

In lieu of using DNG converter there is an option available for your copy of PS but not LR. You could purchase MetaRaw from Harald Heim. https://thepluginsite.com/products/metaraw/index.htm It'll keep your old PS6 kicking for awhile longer.

On1 will fix your issues and is less expensive. Are you locked into Lightroom?

The DNG converter should be fine for a DNG file that can be imported and editing in LR5. You might need to double-check the ARC compatibility version for the DNG output. Test different version numbers and see if there's any difference / problem / benefit of one setting over the other. The converter runs rather quickly, in batch. It just becomes a small new step in your workflow.

FWIW, until recently I also used LR 5.7 and PS CS6. I switched to PS CC and will not go back. First of all I don't have to convert RAW files to DNGs for newer cameras not supported on my versions. a time consuming task. Next, I use LR as my organization program and the new version is smoother and faster. In PS the tools work faster and much more accurately on the updated versions. But, most of all to me, is the Dehaze tool. It's amazing and worth the price of the subscription alone.

I added Matt Kloskowski's "Pre-sets & Brushes" program (only available on CC) and my pictures have improved immensely.

You can do a 30-day free trial of CC. Try it, I'm sure you keep it as well.

Happy shooting!

The dng converter will do it. The other choice is upgrade to the new LR/PS package - problem solved and you get a ton of new function is both.

Thanks to all that replied.

At the moment I am using DNG converter, does not seem to be much of a problem.
In the future I may upgrade to CC, but like ON1 I am getting too old to learn new tricks.

thanks again

Dng will work, but don't discard your original nef files. There could come a time when you'll want to re-edit your raw files in something other than an Adobe product. Dng format is not nearly as universal as Adobe hoped it would be.

On so many levels, the better solution is to get the subscription to LR and PS - and now would be a great time to do it.

There is no way to update Photoshop CS6 to work directly with the D850's RAW files. You need a minimum of Adobe Camera RAW 9.12 and the highest version compatible with CS6 is 9.1.

Lightroom 5.x is also too old to work with the new camera.

However, if you can get hold of a copy of Lightroom 6... That can be updated as far version 6.14, which is able to work directly with D850 RAW files. Convert the camera's RAW to 16-bit TIFF and pass that over to PS CS6 and you'll be able to work with the files without any additional software. Back when it was first released, Lightroom 6 was even offered in a cheaper upgrade version, but only when it was bought and downloaded directly from the Adobe website. Adobe went to great lengths to hide the upgrade offer... you could easily overlook it and pay full price, which was the only option with all the previous versions of LR.

The problem is finding a copy of Lightroom 6. Those are scarce! Adobe no longer supports it. But I think you can still find updates if it's an older version, to bring it up to 6.14 (the last licensed version).

Another possibility is to download and install the free Adobe DNG Converter. That can convert your D850's RAW files from NEF to DNG and then they should be workable in either LR5 or PS CS6.
