Hey Linda, yes for this one I used my 70-200,
but in previous years, I have photographed these guys with my 105 macro at about a foot away.
They have been making a nest in that spot for years. I t is actually on my front porch, they have never bothered me at all.
I guess since I let them live in that spot rent free, they are nice enough to let me take photographs of them.
I have documented them on here in the past, pretty much from start to finish.

Do you know what kind of wasp/hornet? I know around here the yellow jackets are very aggressive and not to be messed with

I get paper wasps to in about the same place every year. A bunch of years ago my neighbor said. "You have to wait till night when they all get into the nest than you can spray them and kill them all." I asked him why did he want to kill even one? They don't hurt or attack. They just mind their own business and do what they do best, build a nest.
I've taken pictures of them less than a foot away with no problems.

Excellent flowers and home care worker

I have had people tell me I need to get rid of them also. They say , oh they will chase you and sting you. I don't think i have ever even had one look at me. But I do err on the side of caution tho. It's just too intriguing watching what they can accomplish.

Yellow Jackets are hornets, and exemplify the cliche "mad as a hornet." I recall being chased by a pack down the Appalachian Trail about 300 yards before they decided to leave me alone. Wasps are more like "live and let live."

Nice photos. Wasps are predators and feed on other insects, therefore an excellent choice of tenants
