This is an interesting thought of a Nikon Z mount in medium format.
Have heard this rumor in the distant past but this looks recent.

Possible but it's as bad an idea as the Z50 but since Nikon made the Z50 nothing stops them from making a medium format in the Z mount.

Nikon has enough problems right now that taking on a whole new line is problematical. Sure, the body is large enough to pop in a medium format sensor, but the processor, the cooling, remain difficult. Then to mount a whole new lens line when it's having problems delivering things already announced is almost a joke. If you want a medium format camera look at the Fuji GF line which is in the same price range as the Nikon D6.

Perhaps not immediately, but the possibility is there.
Pretty cool idea.

If a medium format camera in a Nikon Z shell is ever announced, it will be developed by whichever company buys Nikon out of bankruptcy. Look at Nikon's latest financial statements and see how much money the imaging part of the business is losing. My best guess is Nikon will be acquired by one of two companies, either Sony (who manufactures Nikon's imaging chips and could use the customer base) or Samsung (in an attempt to get back in the camera business with an established format).

Do you really think Nikon is in that bad of shape. They are discussing speeding up their introduction of the Z lenses and at least 2 more Z bodies.
Sounds like they are not failing yet.
And yes, I did see the financial report you are referencing.
I have a wait and see on that though.

It will depend upon the management of Nippon Kogaku on how long they're willing to invest money in a sinkhole. Engineers are leaving, being let go and the horizon is not bright. The current camera division manaagement are betting on the Z, but have two losers in the recent past - the Series One which didn't sell and the point and shoot that never got past the announcement stage. 850 shipping delays were devastating, haven't delivered the D6 in quantity (and probably won't due to the virus) and have a aged product line beneath it. The only thing Nikon has going for it is a loyal user base but how long they can hold on to that is questionable. Both Sony and Samsung have the cash to buy it but more importantly to support it until those new Z cameras and Z lenses start to appear. Maybe some white knight like the guy who saved Leica will appear out of the woodwork, but I wouldn't hold out much hope. (Fuji could be another candidate, but is too well positioned in APS and medium format to even want to take on Nikon).
