How About a Nice Caribbean Cruise?

One side benefit of this virus is the reduction in telemarketing calls. One did get through yesterday, though. I was offered a good deal on a Caribbean cruise, leaving on July 1. Can you imagine? There would be 2,000 strangers from all over the country clumped together on a ship for a week. What are the chances that not one person would be carrying the virus?

We were thinking about a cruise later this year for our 40th wedding anniversary. Thankfully we hadn't booked before this broke out. We used to enjoy cruises. Anymore, we won't go due to what you said (and it could be due to any virus, not just this one) and the thought of being quarantined and not being able to leave the ship like what happened to passengers on several cruise ships this time...Oh, and I've still been getting spam calls, I just don't answer any number I don't know. If it is a legit call, they can leave a message like my termite service did a few days ago...

After seeing so many stuck on their cruise ships for weeks or even months due to quarantine, I don't expect to be interested in taking a cruise for a very long time. Unfortunately, I think this industry is going to be hard hit by the pandemic and it's aftermath. We may even see a complete collapse of this industry due to on going fears of Covid-19 and other contagious diseases. Frankly, even when the ships start running again, I doubt they will ever get back to their former patronage and popularity. This is really sad, but it's a brave new world out there and it's going to be a case of adapt or fail for many business and I just don't see the cruise line industry as having much room to adapt. Maybe when and if we have a good vaccine place, but that will be a long time yet, if it ever really comes to be. Good luck, good health, and good shooting to all.

They don’t need seas. They will moor in any large harbour and become fantastic 6 star hotels.

I can not imagine anyone wanting to go on a cruise anywhere, unless you are a riverboat gambler or don’t care about your own life. Cruises have a slew of issues before the virus and now would not be a good time to think it is safe.

That reminds me of a "cruise" we took in FL. When we checked into a hotel, we were informed of a free gambling cruise that night - with food. Why not? We rode the bus there and boarded a not-very-large ship. After getting out far enough, the gambling began. It was wall to wall gambling. At that point, the ship was more or less idling in place. The food wasn't five-star, but it was okay. It was a good way to kill a night. We didn't lose any money because we didn't gamble.

With all due respect don't cruise passengers take that chance with every single cruise since Columbus sailed the ocean blue. None of us has any clue as to the health of those around us virus or no virus. Are there not incidents of cruise passengers being sick before the virus was upon us?

And no I would not personally book a cruise for this July either.

How funny, strange that is. I have been on a number of cruises and have never noticed not even one issue or problem. I loved every one of them and got to see parts of the world I would never have seen.

Have you been on a number of cruises and had issues/problems? Perhaps you could tell us of some so that I would at least know what to look for in the future.

If you notice how their modern ships are designed, with the space of a modern airliner, they were designed to maximize profits.

Jerry,
I can't seem to find the link again but yesterday I read a report saying one line, I think it was Carnival, was offering cruises for about $28 a day and that bookings were up 600% over last year. The start day for 2020 was August 1.

Sure wish I could find the link again just to be sure. I have no desire whatsoever to cruise right now if ever.

I can’t wait to go on our next cruise, we have about 8 under our belts including two transatlantic ones. More chance on catching something in an airplane than a cruise ship. In either event I am ready to travel again and I care lots about my life!

We already had an Antarctica cruise booked for next January before this virus and very much hope we get to take it.

I've been on a dozen cruises since 1967, and there was never an outbreak of anything but fun. In the past few years, ships have had on-board epidemics that spread from passenger to passenger, but that's something new. With Covid-19, there's a world of difference. People who seem healthy can be carriers. Covid would spread like wildfire on a packed cruise ship. It's a deadly, highly contagious virus for which there is no treatment, and no cure. "Contagious" and "deadly" are a bad combination.

Sure - lots of norovirus - but that gives you the screaming s***s for a few days - it generally doesn't leave you on a ventilator and dead. This is not a "usual" virus!
