Next week's Facebook Create 52 theme is "refraction." Here is one of the first I tried (the plastic straw is elegant, eh? ).

Please share your suggestions, experiences and/or photos for ideas on Refraction Photography. Many thanks!

Layer applied with "lighten" blend mode. There is also tonal contrast/soften from Nik.

"One of the fine wines of Idaho"
Elegant is over-rated ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿท ๐Ÿ‘

Sorry, couldn't find a Dolly wig for Miss Piggy

Or a picture of Steve Martin

The frog doesn't look like Kermit, either

Think I'll go have a drink

Linda, visually the combination of your image and the texture layer are very appealing. I love colors and you have captured the refraction of the straw very well but had that been the actual background wouldn't it have magnified in the water? I did a quick experiment with a glass jar of water and held it up to the window. The background was slightly magnified and distorted. Maybe a separate layer for the background in the water? Just a thought. Artistically I like it just the way it is.

LOL, don't you hate when you can't find just the right emoji? Appreciate your comments and I agree about "elegance." I'm sweat pants and wicker furniture all the way

Oh, what a terrific observation, thank you Keni! The other I did shows that magnification as you described. Much appreciated.

Thanks chasgroh! No, that's not one of my textures. I couldn't recall if I bought it or was free, so I didn't make it available for you folks.

However, below is one I did by simply shooting a neighbor's little white lights (on a balcony railing) out of focus. Feel free to use! There are more in the link below, offered by several members + a few sites mentioned for free files. Once you start looking for them and shooting, it's like creating your own library of clouds and skies: you'll see them everywhere!

Here is my contribution. The background is my laptop computer screen. Made the image in Photoshop. In photoshop when you hit the F key twice your image will be the only thing seen on the screen. If needed you can blow up the image use command+right bracket key. I put a book on each side of the laptop just a little thicker than the keyboard. Then laid a sheet of 1/8" black acrylic over the books and keyboard. Placed a glass ball on top of the black acrylic and about 1" in front of the monitor. I shot three focus images one for the line on the screen, one for the edge of the ball and one for the front of the glass ball. Focus stacked in HeliconFocus. The pattern you see is caused from the monitor's pexels, took me a while to figure that out.

Same type image would work with a glass filled with water.

I like it with the bright background in the original. It doesnโ€™t bother me that it might not be technically correct!
