Stacked or Not

Once I figured out how to take decent pictures of the Moon, and that was back in film days, it got to the point that there had to be something special to trigger me to take another Moon shot. Digital, and accumulating longer lenses added a bit more interest. Last night was very clear, so after I walked the dogs, went out with the D 7200 and Nikon 200-500 5.6 and took seven shots hand held. The first is a single frame, the last a seven shot stack. What do you think?

Looks great. Stacking definitely helps bring out more detail and averages out atmospheric turbulence for long focal length images.

Yeah the stack is sharper. i’m gonna have to try that one of these days.
What software was this done in?

Thanks for commenting. Simplest of the simple software - Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Looks fine.

I never could stack. Turned out it was my crappy camera.
Because 5 friends here tried, and none of them could neither.
Then a friend offered to loan me his Atik Infinity to try, I immediately resisted. But he persisted.
I found [b[instant[/b] success with the Infinity. Then he sold it to me and I've been forever thankful for that.
It stacks as it gathers the images and is perfect for this bear cub.

I would advise you don't try to over-sharpen your images. Leave a little softness to them.

Thanks! Believe I'm done buying camera gear. Generally am a fan of sharp, but only use the sharpen tool very lightly - a few percent of what is available. Thanks for the suggestion though, will keep it in mind!

Hi BassmanBruce
For the moon sun and planets I have used Registax6 and AutoStakket3. Both are freeware and work well. I found the Registax6 only has a 32 bit version so if you stacks 100's to 1000's of TIFF files it will run out of memory at 4Gig, but Registax does have wavelet processing which can be useful and you can always stack with a different routine and bring in the stacked image into Registax to do wavelet processing. AutoStakket has a 64 bit version and handle large number of TIFF files if your system has sufficient RAM. If you have any questions let me know.
