First attempts, new Canon Sx70 HS

I got my new SX 70 yesterday and thought I'd post a couple of first shots I took this morning getting used to the controls.
My first impression of the camera is very good. It feels great in my hands and the operations seem pretty straight forward. The super zoom will take some getting used too. As with any long lens, you must hold very steady or use a tripod to get a steady clear photo, no different here.
Of course any camera is some sort of trade off, but my hope is that I'll learn it well enough to satisfy me.

The photos were taken from my property, the white house is my home, and the old buildings are across the road and field about .50 miles away . The bird is in the top of a tree in my yard.
Nothing special, just a first go.

Nice work.
The Eastern Shore handyman special looks very familiar.
I go to the VA clinic on 16, behind Walmart.
When I go I ramble thru Blackwater and down onto most of the 'Necks'.
Always plenty of photo ops (and oops, too).
I believe the house is somewhere near Crappo.
Please satisfy my curiosity.
Being retired myself these last ten years or so, I, too keep active with cameras.
My name, by the way, is Bill.
Lifelong Annapolitan and 'Eastportarican.
Bump into you one day?
Good evening to you.
Bill

Hi Bill

The photos were taken in Stockton but am familiar with Blackwater and that neck of the woods a little. There is plenty on the eastern shore to keep me busy photographing. I'm minutes away from Asseteague Bay and Chincoteague . My wife and i ride our bicycles there frequently.
I got the new Sx 70 bridge specifically to carry a decent camera without having to fumble with lenses and carry a bunch of SLR equipment.
After just one day, I am pretty pleased.
Those who are pickier than me would criticize the sensor size or argue all day about potential image quality etc. But I figure its like being in a gun-fight, first rule is bring a gun. Same with taking pictures...
I am also a woodworker..there we say don't blame the tools, blame the craftsman.

Congrats on your new SX-70. That is a nice camera and should serve you well.
Don’t be worried about the sensor size. The only times you will be disappointed in it will be when you attempt to push it beyond its design parameters. The small, 1/2.3” sensors don’t do well in low light, so the camera will have difficulty focusing, and often, if you use the auto mode, images can appear “grainy,” or “noisy” due to the camera selecting a high ISO setting. Use it in good light or with flash and should have good luck with it. You’ve got a great camera for capturing bird shots, by the way.

Yeah
I noticed things could be a little grainy depending on the situation (really long zoom and low light).
I figure there are work-around's for that. Like you said, if you stay within camera parameters, its fine.
For me, its not a big issue.
I did alot of homework on what camera I wanted so my eyes were wide open from the start.
I already have been playing with shutter speeds and that has helped.
I can sit on the porch and photograph birds all day!
I posted this one elsewhere but for the first day with the camera, I am well pleased.

I think you’ll like it, and the more you use it the more comfortable you’ll be with it. You might try using slower shutter speeds and higher ISO’s, with the camera on a tripod.

I found with mine that the best thing I could do to improve my images was to go into the menu system and set AF Frame to “FlexZone.” It makes the focus box in the middle of the OVF and lcd the smallest. Also, allows the user to exercise the most control.
