VR should be OFF when on tripod. It takes time to learn new equipment. I would keep working it and trying different focal lengths. I have seen so many beautiful photos made with the 200-500, so I know it can be done. Good luck.

Took several photos today and they all have a "narrow" clear window and weird streaks. Still trying to get used to the 200-500.

It's a function of the telephoto lens. They can, depending on the distance from the subject to the lens and the background to the subject, do this. Experiment with the lens. Remember, they are made for shooting subjects far, far away for the most part. I have shot many of these types of images with my Nikon 200-500 and many more images, at a much greater distance, that don't do this. Get to know your lens and what it does at a set distance. If you were hand-holding the movement might have affected the blades of grass, too. Some shots are made for this distance away, many are not.

Thanks for your reply Linda. I probably did not save the original since I can't find it in my files but I am including another taken at the same time, same light (cloudy) and from the same distance. No changes were made to this one.
You are right, I did sharpen a lot and cropped, also some contrast all using VIEW NX2. The shutter speed on this one was slightly higher.

What f-stop was used? When you sharpen use local sharpening and adjustments on your subject only where needed.

But the 'streaks ' are evident in both the un-sharpened and sharpened image within the OOF areas.

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess it’s practice, practice, practice.

YUP. and that's a great lens.
It looks to me like you just have some funky bokeh in the OOF areas.

Your shutterspeed is still way too slow for a moving bird. 1/640-1/2000
There is way too much grass and not enough bird. Get closer.

Shallow depth of field can be a good thing, used to isolate your subject from a distracting bkd.

Looks like your shutter speed was too slow and you got a lot of motion blur. 1/250 is sorta slow at long zoom ranges when hand held if the light is mildly low.

Thinking that camera shake may have added to motion blur at 1/250 speed

Try to close the aperture more so you get more depth of field. I agree that the lines you see are an artifact of the software trying to bring the out of focus grass into focus.
