This is my preserved little Katydid that I've had the better part of the year now. I cleaned my camera sensor and lens today so I staged it for a focus stacking session to see if they still worked after me futzing with them which it appears that they do.
thats a sorry looking Katydid :) nice stack though!

Tinusbum, It's been spending its time in alcohol for about a year now and I'm noticed that the alcohol tends to take the color out of the softer bodied insects such as this one which of course was more greenish. The hard cased insects like the Japanese Beetle and Milkweed Beetles tend to hold up well and they retain their jewel-like colors.
Others tend to turn dark due to the bacteria in their gut track that continues to live after they expire. I've learned that putting them in scalding water for a few moments before preserving them helps prevent that although it can effect the eyes by turning them glassy.

Thanks, Napapbob. I truly wish that they would retain their colors when preserved however I quite thankful to have specimens to get me through until things pop here again.
