BNSF approaching the west portal at Bozeman Pass on Montana Rail Link
Hi,
What is the buffer car between the power and the tank cars?
Nice picture. It looks cold!

A buffer car is required between the power and the lading on some hazmat shipments. Usually they're old covered hoppers filled with gravel for ballast. More often than not they take older cars out of revenue service and stick them in the captive service.

I believe they have groups of tank cars (maybe 50 cars) with a buffer car on each end and when two groups of cars are put together there would be 2 buffer cars together in the middle of the train and then there would be a buffer car in front of the pusher.
A beautiful photograph, sharp focus, great composition and exposure. Well done.

This is basically a great shot, but I would do some editing. Overall, I would lighten the image and increase the contrast overall. Even though the sky is grey, the snow should be white, not grey, so I would make a layers of the locomotives and buffer car and lighten, adjust contrast and color saturation to make the engine colors pop.
Nice shot. Your reply on buffer cars is correct.
A train just like that rolls through Oregon every week with Union Pacific locos...If your the first one at the crossing......you get dizzy watching it whiz by......GREAT CAPTURE!
Great capture. Mahalo for sharing.
