Lightroom "photo already imported" but not there

Greetings hoggers! I've been following UHH for some time, and thank you all for your helpful insights. I have an image that I've imported into Lightroom, which shows up in the grid view but not the filmstrip. If I use Find, it says "No photos match that filter." If I right click on the (dimmed out) grid view image, it says it's already in the catalog. It's not in Missing Photographs, nor in Find All Missing Photos. The original raw file is is still in the original directory with the others in the same batch that do show up (though it was taken and imported later.) How do I recover it so I can edit it, or delete it from the catalog so I can re-import it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't have the problem right now in my catalog, but I've encounter something like what you've described where I've moved images around after import. Try these two additional investigations:

1. In the grid view, right click the image and select 'show in explorer'. This will take you to the folder via the operating system. Confirm the file resides where LR thinks it resides on disk.

2. Somewhat similar, right click the image and select 'show in folder'. If I remember my problem from the last occurrence, the issue was a 'lingering' image in folder that I was no longer using and the file no longer resided in that folder. I deleted / removed the folder entry from the Library catalog to resolve.

If the two ideas above don't help to determine the cause, you can go to the all photos view of the catalog, right click the image, and select remove and just remove from the catalog, when prompted. You should then be able to re-import.

Please consider not using Lightroom unless you plan on becoming, also, a computer engineer. If you just take the pictures you want, transfer them to Windows and edit them with Photos, save and publish the ones you care for and delete the rest, you will be OK for quite a while. Unless you want to to learn the Windows filesystem (which seems to be changing) and Lightroom (as it stands today), the above advice is the best I can give.

If you are a Professional Photographer, please ignore the above.

Not helpful.

There are a lot of people here and on other forums who use LR without any advanced computer degrees. It's not rocket science (and I can say that, having been involved in rocket science in the past).

This is nonsense. It seems that you were unable to figure out the software so you assume that others cannot figure it out either. However, thousands (could be millions) of people have figured it out and use it successfully. Each of us has a different ability to figure out software and it is not sane to assume that everyone has the same ability or lack thereof. I am not a Professional Photographer but instead a dedicated enthusiast and I've used LR and PS for about 10 years now. All software has a learning curve, even Windows. Don't participant in a discussion if you cannot be helpful.

To delete a photo simply hit "delete" and a box will pop up giving you choices, either delete from disk or delete from LR. Obviously, you want to only delete from LR. This should allow you re-import that image. There is always the possibility that particular image is somehow corrupted and that is why you have a problem. I'm not sure what this means, "The original raw file is is still in the original directory with the others in the same batch that do show up... ." I use a Mac and we don't use the term "directory." Is the file in the same folder as the others, saying you added it later I wonder if that might be an issue somehow. Have you tried opening and closing the image in another way to make sure the image itself is not corrupted? It's always difficult to provide assistance without being there and knowing all the details. Good luck.

I would try to export that one photo to a temporary catalog, but make sure you have the xmp file enabled. That way if you re-import the file the edits you had before may accompany it.

Note that in LR if you unlink an image the edits remain in the catalog. If you then relink the image it will simply hook up with the previously done edits. This will only work if you do not change the file name. LR links up by file name.

CHG_CANON,

Thanks for the tips. Show in Explorer confirmed that the file was still in the original folder, and it magically appeared with Show in Folder, enabling me to edit it using the Develop module. Thanks for your help!

This is really silly advice.

I agree that many people have successfully trained themselves to use Lightroom and Photoshop. I have myself. But many new folks coming to the craft are being turned away by the jargon and difficult manipulations suggested by people who can use these tools. For example:

"Note that in LR if you unlink an image the edits remain in the catalog. If you then relink the image it will simply hook up with the previously done edits."

If you want confirmation of this, give your spouse or loved one the above excerpt and have them tell you what it means.

I still maintain that the beginner can import an image from camera to computer with Photos, display it, print it, name it and save it with a simple interface. (I'm not a Mac user and defer to them.)

Photo manipulation is an aspect of Photography but planning and taking the photo comes before that and processing it comes directly after. Let's let the beginner get that under their belt (with the help of a computer these days) before requiring them to learn about "links" and "edits".

Thank you for listening to me. (I have been a UHH reader for many years.)

I am not skilled in the LR catalog management scheme, so I just do things very simply:
1. take photos
2. download photos to a file in computer
3. import photos to LR
4. process photos in LR
5. group selected photos into albums in LR to publish for Flickr or SmugMug
6. publish LR albums

or 5a. export photos to e-mail or computer file (sub-file or rename)
6a. use enhanced photo from computer or send e-mail

I don't move original photos around in my computer files or rename them unless done by LR--I can do anything I want to with ones that have been exported back to the computer.
