I am a new and completely amateur photographer. So I guess it's good that I am here. But the true reason is because my 22 year old daughter's minor at UNLV is photography. I want more information to be able to share in her passion and at least not sound like a total idiot.

Sounds like a great opportunity to bond. What part of “photography” is she passionate about? If there are activities you can do together (i.e., birding trips), you will have great opportunities to be together. Also, she might enjoy the role of teaching her old man about the nuances of the hobby. Finally, If you are “the bank of Dad” who will end up payong for gear, UHH can help you make sense of why XYZ piece of equipment might be important for specific purposes.

Just to let you know, for all of its apparent simplicity, you can do this stuff for 50 years and occasionally still sound like a total idiot to someone somewhere due to the diversity of individual interests and interpretation as you will see if you stick with it long enough.
