Welcome to UHH.

If you have a celphone and have been taking pictures with it, then you have not been out that long
DSLR & Mirrorless are nothing more than specialized & dedicated digital versions of the point and shoot/Film cameras.

Manufacturers and New-tool-photographers will want you to get the newest-most expensive cameras and lens. You don't have to follow their hard sell. Even the lowest price Nikon D3300 or Canon Rebel can take better images than some of the old film SLR's.

IMHO, try to watch some You tube reviews of as many models as you can to have a general overview of the past, recent & current trends/models. But take each with a grain of salt, even my own comment as most are afflicted with "My tool is best syndrome", "the new tool is better fever" or "i want your money disease".

If you like to take a shortcut, IMHO and again with lost of salt, the best bang for buck camera today is the Nikon D7200.

Welcome aboard! This is great forum with lots of knowledgeable people here. My advice would be to get to a camera store and handle several models. My picks would be Nikon, Canon, Sony. See which camera feels good in your hands. Before you go, get some idea of the kind of photography you like. Make a list of lenses you might use -- wide angle, something for portraits, macro, or telephoto for wildlife. Check prices on lenses in those configurations and know what to expect as far as price goes. Some people may tell you to begin slow with a bridge camera or low end major brand, but I will tell you to spend as much as you are comfortable spending. The reason is that the most expensive part of digital is the up front cost. You will no longer have to shell out money for film (other than for a few SD cards which I consider digital film), and processing is nil.
If you start at the low end and decide to have a real go at this as a serious hobby or part-time business, you don't want to be stuck with a bunch of low end gear you will not use in the future or have to sell off at a greatly reduced amount. As you begin, you may want to consider these aspects: Are you serious about getting back into photography or do you just want something that will give you better photos than your cell phone. Up front costs to get into something better than phone shots can cost as little as 250.00 for a slightly used but decent bridge camera (one that falls between a point-and-shoot, and a camera used by serious amateurs and professionals), to beginner kits like a Nikon 3500 with two kit lenses (lenses that while may be very sharp and produce excellent results do not have wide constant apertures that pro lenses have), for around 600.00. Again, if money is no object, then look at the cameras they consider designed for serious amateurs and which some pros use as well. Those in Nikon might be the D610, D7500, D500, D750, Z6. Canon has a similar lineup of bodies and all these with a body and kit lens (usually a 24-120 or 18 -105 -- something in that range). This will give you a reasonably good wide angle all the way to a short tele-photo. The cost in this range of cameras will be in the 1500.00 to 2500.00 range. I may not have answered all your questions but hope I have given you some things to think about.
Best wishes for a fun filled future taking great shots!
