My first thought was "collapse!"; I've never seen a rail overpass without apparent structural support. Would love to see the engineering plans for this construct. Nice shot.
The idea of arches as support structures goes back a long way.
I believe that the corrugated tubes were easily attained for such uses.
A thought bubble just burst! I vaguely recall something of this nature in regards of building the Chunnel across the English channel. As to why the dig was circular/tubaler. (Did a quick google, but could not form the correct question.)
