Definitely worth the effort. Both are great but love the flight shot. Great light and, for lack of another word, the texture of the bird.

Thank you Nalu. Let's just say I had a lot of PP for the bird in flight and tried several different tools to present what I have. Gary

If you had only gotten the one in flight, the trip would have been worth it! Beautiful.

suntouched, thanks for the kind words. Having lived in Fl;orida for 42 years, I have not been that cold in a while. Gary

Magnificent creatures well captured...thanks for sharing and congratulations!!

jedrick, I have seen images of these birds in the wild from professional photographers, and it always intrigued me to go find them. The setting is not what I had envisioned, but the were quite stunning to see, even if they were mostly on telephone poles. Interesting at first I thought something was wrong with my camera, I would see the male in my viewfinder, but when he turned his head, it looked like the top of his head was out of focus. Strange, I thought the cold weather did something to my camera. Gary

NICE ! ......thanks for sharing especially the info

imagemeister, you are an old Florida dog like me, we shoot in the cold Florida winters all of the time. I have heard and read a lot about cold batteries, etc., but never experienced them. I thought the whole battery had to come back to room temperature and that was not the case. Gary

Thanks for the info on batteries. I have wondered if they would return to normal after being left in the cold or frozen. I once knew someone who froze his batteries in his freezer until near time he needed them and have often wondered if that is or is not a good way to store batteries. Wonderful shots.

Wanda, thank you. I have only frozen dead batteries to see if I could revive them. Not so lucky. My fear was that all of my batteries were dead and not coming back, having been left in the trunk over a weekend. I thought the guide would have taken all of the equipment to his room. As he got sick, I am glad he did not. Gary

Nice ,better yet fantastic captures. Where about in Saul St Marie? Tahquamenon falls State Park was in the same area Also Whitefish Point another great place to go for birds. It looks like you had a great time. Thanks for sharing.

Camera Man, thank you. You must see the Snowy Owls all of the time being from MI. We drove around the back roads, and saw them mostly between 5 and 9 mile road, but a couple further south. We spotted most of the owls east of I-75. We found it interesting that the roads were named by how far they were from the Canadian border. Had we had a guide, we may have done a lot better, but at least we saw the owls. We went as far south as Drummond Island and took the ferry across for the experience, we do not see that in Florida. We also saw the Coast Guard breaking up the ice to keep the shipping lanes open. The Soo locks were closed for the winter, which was disappointing, but all in all it was a good trip. Gary

Nice shots. Such a magnificent raptor. I've been looking all over for one here but they aren't at their usual spots yet. Gary

Another Gary, good morning. I was very impressed and at the same time in awe of the beauty. Have you check ebird? That is how we found them, based on our lousy map and willingness to drive the roads in a given location. Happy hunting. Gary

I went to Sault Ste Marie, MI looking for Snowy Owls. We saw six males and two females, only one flight shot, but both were magnificent. Tough shooting conditions, gloomy skies, snowy, or blowing snow, and just poor light. Comments and criticisms welcomed. Gary

As a side note, my camera gear was transported for me so I did have to carry it with me on the airlines. My gear was left out in the cold for two days in the trunk and when I finally retrieved my gear, all of the batteries were dead (My first experience with a cold dead battery). I panicked as I was getting ready to go out and shoot the first day. I placed all of the batteries near a heating unit and within 5 - 10 minutes they were back to normal. I did keep spare batteries with me, but I used the same battery in both of my cameras (Canon 7D Mkii and 6D) and no need to change them out until I was at the end of my three day trip. About 620 shots with my 7D and only 50 with my 6D. Most of the days was spent driving in search of the Owls. Some would stay while we would shoot and others would fly quickly.
I went to Sault Ste Marie, MI looking for Snowy Ow... (show quote)

Great shots and what a wonderful adventure!! Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m hoping to see a snowy owl someday.

Camera Man, You are right, beautiful country. We could even tell it blanketed in the snow. I have some images of old farm equipment buried in the snow of the farmers property. Gary
