We hadn't been to M.V. in over 15 years and decided to make a winter trip when crowds are fewer. We visited the Park on two different days trying to catch better light and were unsuccessful, in large part. Weather stayed iffy both days, mostly overcast with short periods of sunlight. Only the Chapin Ridge Loop is open in winter which includes the Mesa Verde Visitors Center and Museum.
Still, as M.V. has over 600 ruin sites, there is a lot to see and take in.

I will make several posts over the next week of the sites we did visit/photograph. Today's post our photos of Spruce Tree House and some scattered ruins surrounding the main alcove. These photos were taken from a vantage point across the canyon housing the ruins and are best seen in "Download".

Nicely done. The last time I was there it was late in the day and by the time I got to the ruins (that road is really LONG!) I had almost no light. What time of day are you finding the best lighting?

Nice ones--I was there a long time ago, during my break from photography.

Many thanks, Bob. It is indeed and we had been away too long. We're trying to revisit National Parks et al that we haven't been to in a long time.

Many thanks AzPicLady and that is one heck of a long winding 21 miles!! Overall, depending on the season, I would suggest mid afternoon provide's the best direct sunlight to avoid the late afternoon shadows.

Thanks John. Our first trip there was in 1974 with our 6 y/o son and 8 y/o daughter...had our hands full keeping track of them as we wondered through the ruins, which you could in those days. Back then I was using a slr film camera and a 50mm lens.

Great job with these. I really like the light, especially on Spruce Tree House. Last time I was there the light was very harsh. Got some pretty good shots but yours are better.
