Another Miracle Device

I just got an email about a simple backup device for a computer. InfinitiKloud costs $50 with a 64GB MicroSD card and plugs into a USB port. The built-in software prompts you to choose files to back up. Like other products advertised online, the ad runs for several thousand words. You could also buy a 64GB flash drive from Amazon for about $10.

They prey on (help?) people who know little about computers (and have no desire to), file storage, and the like.
Something like "This widget will do all the work for you.". Like a photo stick.
Best to learn about files, storage, and their manipulation.

I’ve seen ads for a number and of these devices and I don’t get it either. Where’s the magic?

It reminds me of counterfeit Chinese goods where their biggest cost is in their producing an authentic looking package.

It's like many fishing lures they catch more people than fish.

I've been saying that to my wife for about 25 years when she says she can't find something on her computer and I ask her where she saved it and she says "what?"

If it was anybody else I'd tell her to find it herself, but I still like to eat and do other things, so . . .

It appears that "if it appears to good to be true, it is" etc is just not being practiced any more. Everyone has just that little bit of extra money they don't mind losing. Who is going to make a Federal deal of being cheated of $50? The bigger problem is when the bad guys go on a spending spree. People have lost all sense of being practical. Why do we need to keep reminding them?

I have more than a terabyte of photos. I'd need 25 of these just for my photos, never mind whatever else I might have. And my experience with thumb drives is they are not too reliable. Think I'll look for a different solution.
