A lot of the time when you see that it's the sugar that's being avoided, not the calories.

I worked in a deli for many years during summers. I made countless overstuffed pastrami/corned beef sandwiches with sides of potato salad, french fries and a request for Diet Coke. We'd laugh to ourselves as we served the customer(s).

Someone is always joking about people ordering high calorie food and then getting a diet soda. I'll bet those people aren't diabetic. I don't have a problem with fat or cholesterol, but I avoid sugar. I might order a double cheeseburger and a diet soda.
