He bought a company that was losing "tens of millions" per year, didn't really add any further incentives for a Pro account, and is wondering why he's still losing money.

I have a pro account and will let it lapse in July when it's up for renewal, not because of the price, but because it's a failing business and this latest push to have subscribers pay 2 years up front is a very scary business practice. This type of activity lead me to believe that Mr. MacAskill is either trying to recoup as much as he can from the previous years loss before he shuts the site down, or tries to make it more lucrative for a potential buyer. The latter is exactly how he got into this mess, taking on a failing business.

Same here. Not thrilled with Flickr anymore. He needs to change his business plan from mining his existing customer base to generating added value to bring new people on board. I let him get away with charging me double what I paid when Yahoo! owned Fickr but I ain't gonna let him get away with it a second time. His calculus that he could soak us for more $$ was just another in a long list of mistakes.

My God. That will surely break the bank. Pretty soon the bread lines will be around the block.
What is this world coming to????

I was able to log into my account on Flickr yesterday and there was a blue banner at the top of the page with an offer to extend my subscription for two additional years at the existing price of 49.00 a year. If not there send a email to the support team at Flickr asking how you can extend your subscription at the old price. They were helpful for me.

The banner will come back. I closed it out and it popped back up the next time I logged in to my account, like a homeless beggar staring at me at a stoplight for some spare change.

I extended mine but I did have misgivings. I just hope it wasn't a mistake...

I wanted to, and can't really blame anyone for doing so. It's a very good platform that is easy to use and provided a place to easily share out photographs to friends, family, and the masses. The only reason I didn't pull the trigger is that it didn't pass the smell test. I have this strange feeling that the CEO is trying to bring in as much money as he can to mitigate his losses and cut the site all together, or make it look as attractive as possible to a potential buyer.

My subscription ends in July and after that I will either decide to stay free, go monthly, or extend for a year. It all depends on the risk as the money for me is no issue.

I've used Flickr for some years now and I can't say I've found any other that I liked better. I hope they can stay around.

Flickr is owned by Smug Mug. I would imagine that at anytime they will be merged. I switched a few years ago and glad I did.

When they started charging for Flickr (and I don't blame them at all for that), it seemed to me that their price structure was wrong. Rather than $50 for 1000 pix and above, why not have a sliding scale. Something like $10 for 200-400 pix, $20 for 401-800 pix, $30 for 801-1000, and so on. I bet the very numerous small accounts would be more profitable for them. $50 for 1000 or more seems like too much for the average enthusiast, given we likely pay out for lots of other non-essential subscriptions too (cable, WiFi, etc.).

I pretty much gave up on Flickr when it went paid. I keep under 1000 images there and basta. It's not like I need a gallery, as I have my website, and I could care less for a few likes and/or comments.
