I need some clarity! 1st my equipment: Nikon D3300 with a 70-300 lens. There is NO switch on the lens for AF to MF. However it is printed on the lens AF - P. The lens does have a manual ring for focus. OK, If I have the camera in AF will not the lens MF override the camera AF? Should I just have both camera and lens in MF at the same time? If so why do I have a lens that says AF -P if it's constantly in MF with the adjustable ring? Should I ditch this lens and get one with a switch option? What does the "P" stand for - Priority I assume? I guess I asked a lot of questions but I do THANK you for any help you send my way!

The "P" on the lens stands for PULSE focus motor. You need to turn off the AF in the menu system in order to use manual focus.

The Nikon D3300 camera body does not have an internal focus motor.

I don't have the D5300, but on my D7200 and AF-P 70-300 VR, with the camera in AF mode, I can overide the AF by turning the focus ring, when I half press, it immediately refocusses on the target...if the camera is set to MF via the external switch, it will focus manually, no AF. I also have a non-VR copy and could test that too. Hope this is helpful......

There is a menu option on my D3400 to allow manual focus when in auto focus mode, I believe this is the same on the D3300. If this option is turned off the lens will only manual focus when manual focus is selected on the camera. When this option is turned on manual focus is always on with this lens. When auto focus is on and in shutter release focus you can adjust focus manually by holding the shutter release at half press and then turn the manual focus ring. If you release the shutter button the camera will refocus when you take a picture. If you use Back Button Focus the lens will manual focus until you press the bbf button.

From what I found The d3300 is compatible with the AF-P lens but needs the latest firmware upgrade to do so 1.0.1.. AF-P lenses like this AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens can be used with the D3300. D3300 firmware version 1.0.1 is required in order to be able to enable/disable the lens VR (vibration reduction). D3300 firmware version 1.0.1 can be downloaded from this address: http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/174.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/174.htmlhttp://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/174.html . When using an AF-P lens on the D3300 the camera’s setup menu will not have the “Manual Focus Ring in AF mode” option so this feature will remain enabled. When enabled, “Manual Focus Ring in AF mode” allows the lens focus ring to be used for manual focus when the camera is in autofocus mode. I tried these Links they do not seem to work...but hope you can use some of this info..when this link takes you to this site on nikon CLICK on download center home ,then chose digital SLR cameras ,then chose D3300 pick firmware ver.1.02 thats it.......

Thanks! On your last sentence.... If the camera is in AF mode, and I use the lens focus ring won't it take over from the camera? Or which is in control? Sorry, I'm sooo thick on this. lol Also, if I download the firmware for the lens.... er uh how will the lens know it is to get it from my computer. Seee I told ya I'm dense.

The installation instructions are available from the same location where the software is available from the support section of the Nikon site. Just read them and follow them to install the firmware update.

I don't understand, first you say your lens does not feture a AF/MF switch, and then you ask, if you should leave it set to "ON"??

arrrr I don't understand what you don't understand. No switch on lens for mf /af. Perhaps the " on " you're referring to is that the lens has PRINTED "on" it AF-P. ( ? )

You also need a empty or freshly formatted SD card...to to transfer the upgrade to the camera...

thx I just bought a new Sd card and have taken only a few photos. Can I delete them then format it or will it be considered empty after I delete?
