“Morning Leader” at Bosque del Apache

One from the archives - shot at Bosque del Apache NWR, NM.

This sandhill crane was the first one “up-and-out” of the tens of hundreds roosting the previous night on the nearby braided Rio Grande in the NWR.

Any and all critiques welcomed.

Indeed it was, Coz; and one that kept on giving.
This was my third morning trying to get this sunrise shot. The prevailing breeze and lighting in early January were essentially identical all three mornings, and the bird cooperated on the third morning. I was set up hoping to get the crane’s body illuminated against that horizontal strip of low terrain still in shadow. Had to be sure to get the shot when she wasn’t flying through my shadow! He...or she...flew exactly as if she had read the script! Karma pays off! (May such be my karma in the next life...but Tanya - my bride - says “Don’t count on it!”).

Upon closer inspection of the bird I found that the eye was blurred. The most important aspect of wildlife photography is an eye that is in focus. This is critical to a successful shot and, yes, it is very difficult to get but that is the challenge of wildlife photography. You might consider attempting to sharpen the eye in Photoshop to see if that works.

Hi, Connie,
Thanks for looking, and yes, I am aware of the soft eye...and a few other faults I was also concerned about, but so far, they seem to pass muster.

Lovely light right where it's needed, Dave. Nice shot.
