Ordered one of these new NIKKOR lenses as I am getting older and carrying my 400mm 2.8 is getting harder so I went ahead and ordered this lens well 9 1/2 months later it will finally arrive today never waited so long for any camera gear before, hope it’s worth it?

That's a Nikon new release in late 2018, prime lens. It is not f2.8, but fast enough for sunny daylight weather. Wildlife approved. Supposedly released in limited supply. Much like the D850 was, when it first came out. In due time, supply will catch up to demand. The lens is priced at about $3600. It looks like a great lens. Enjoy it. I think it will be worth it.

I ordered one about 3 months ago- guess I still have a long time to wait. Enjoy your new lens and let us know how you like it.

Mas: Look at the title of the OP, or maybe you were referring to the 400mm then ignore.

I was referring to the 500mm lens that is in the title of the OPs Post. He said being older, the 400mm f2.8 was a burden to carry.

You are really going to like it. Below is an example, hand held on a D850 with vertical grip taken wide open at about 20 yards away, Green Heron.

If you order directly from Nikon you receive the lens quicker. After a 6 month wait from Adorama I ordered mine from Nikon and received in about 2 months. I just now cancelled my order from Adorama as they notified last week ready to ship. A total of 10 month wait..... Wonderful Lens....

When I used Nikon gear I had a Nikkor 300mm f4 PF ED VR + TC14EIII. It was brilliant. If I still used Nikon I would have sold my 300mm f4 and my Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 for the 500mm f5.6 PF ED VR. Hope you enjoy it, I'm sure you will.

Ordered mine from Amazon May 4th, got it last week. Amazingly light and compact for what it is. I spent an afternoon at Bosque del Apache on Tuesday, and shot everything handheld, even with the 1.4x extender with no problems, on my Z7 with the Z-mount converter.

I'm sure you'll love your new lens.

I have one and love it. It is mounted almost permanently to my D500. Size and weight is about the same as a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8. I use it w/o a tripod about 50% of the time.

Its weak link is its tripod collar foot. Check out a replacement foot from Wimberley. Check out Steve Perry's review of it at BackCountry

Seems these orders have to incubate for at least 9 months

Great lens. I did replace the foot with the RRS one so it doesn't fall off. I'm disappointed in how compromised the autofocus is on my D850 with the 1.4 TC.

Interesting. I didn't notice any issues on my Z7, but I wasn't using it in extreme conditions. the only thing I miss is the greater depth of field of my m4/3 kit.

other than saving about 2# weight, what other advantages does this lens offer over the 200-500 f5.6 Nikon Zoom? 2# weight savings is nice, but at about $1350 per lb. it's a lot of $$.
